Grignard

A Grignard reagent is one which has the chemical formula RMgX, where X is a halogen and R is an alkyl or aryl group. Grignard reagents are valuable in chemical synthesis for the formation of carbon-carbon, carbon-phosphorus, carbon-silicon and other carbon-heteroatom bonds.

Numerous variations of Grignard use exist, including coupling reactions, oxidation, nucleophilic aliphatic substitution, and elimination. The single most common use of of Grignards is coupling reactions.
