Polymer Synthesis

Control Attribute and Quality of Polymer Chemistry

The creation of macromolecules through polymer synthesis chemistry is diverse, and yet the fundamental requirements for the characterization of the wide range of polymer chemistries share many similarities.  In research, full understanding the kinetics, pathway and mechanism of polymer chemistry are all important to controlling the attributes and quality of the final product.  METTLER TOLEDO technology is well suited to developing an in depth understanding of polymer chemistry.
  • ReactIRTM for real-time in situ reaction monitoring is used during polymer synthesis for kinetic analysis and elucidating mechanism and pathway.  The presentation - Improving Understanding and Control of Polymer Synthesis Using Real-Time In Situ FTIR - discusses the use of ReactIRTM to gain insight into the important polymerization parameters.
  • Polymer growth kinetics are complex and have significant effect on downstream particle size and particle morphology.  Therefore, under- or oversize polymer particle distributions will negatively affect yield, bulk density, and product quality.  FBRM® is used for online monitoring of polymer particle growth and agglomeration providing particle number and size distribution in real-time.  The online seminar Real-Time Control of Particle Size Using Inline Particle Characterization Techniques - discusses the application of FBRM® technology to gain insight into and make decisions on optimization and control strategies for repeatable synthesis of polymers.
  • EasyMaxTM and LabMax provide a well controlled environment at research scale that not only provides thermodynamic information that can be used for kinetic analysis, but also eliminates the problems associated with poor control of critical process parameters such as temperature.  Download the LabMax Runs Continuous Process application note.
  • Characterization of the thermodynamics is critical in developing a safe and scalable process in order to go manufacturing.  RC1TM Reaction Calorimeter  and iC SafetyTM software provide accurate thermodynamic information used to develop safe operating parameters in a manufacturing environment.
