Investigate Chemical Processes Safely

RC1e Reaction Calorimeter for Reaction CalorimetryMost processes in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are batch or semi-batch processes that are run in stirred tank reactors. The heat release and heat removal have to be well balanced and, therefore, the process must be investigated thoroughly in order to avoid the accumulation of reagents or energy. In addition, “What-if?” scenarios have to be developed depending on the results from which preventive measures can be derived.

METTLER TOLEDO has over 30 years of experience in calorimetry and building instrumentation for the safety labs around the world. Our Reaction Calorimeter RC1 is the industry’s ‘Gold Standard’ for measuring heat profiles, enthalpies, chemical conversions and heat transfer of the desired process under process-like conditions.
Measuring the heat release in real time lets the engineer optimize the process instantly while reducing the amount of experiments required. Defining the ideal dosing profile with standard technologies requires a series of experiments. The real-time based heat release measurement RTCal™, together with iControl™ software, allow the dosing rate of a reagent to be continuously adjusted ensuring that the heat release stays below the predefined value.

iC Safety™ converts the measured data into critical safety information and delivers the widely used ‘Runaway Graph’ and ‘Criticality Class’ at a mouse click.

Using the RC1 High Performance Thermostat is the safest way to investigate chemical processes. The thermostat is equipped with a split oil circuit allowing approx 6L of pre-cooled oil to be instantaneously injected into the cooling circuit and rapidly cool the reactor contents. Furthermore, the complete system is equipped with an intrinsic safety system detecting any irregularities, ensuring the reactor content is kept under control at all times and ensuring that the process investigation can be executed at a maximum level of personal safety.
