Faster Certifications Increase Productivity

Productivity from POWERCELL PDXAsphalt concrete suppliers in the State of New York need to recertify truck scales every 90 days during construction season. Due to the lengthy process each time scales were recertified an aggregate company lost time and money. METTLER TOLEDO dramatically reduced certification time by supplying a new truck scale equipped with POWERCELL® PDX® load cells.

This particular company has engineered and built roads in New York since the 1920s. What started as a small paving company has expanded to become a technology leader in highway construction and maintenance. In order to supply materials for its paving projects, the company also operates two regional aggregate quarries. Whether selling aggregates to local businesses or processing asphalt concrete for road construction, the company depends on accurate and reliable vehicle weighing.

Replacing Inefficient Equipment
At one of the company’s largest facilities, they have three truck scales. One weighs crushed stone and sand that is sold to the public or construction contractors. The other two weigh material produced by their two asphalt concrete plants. Before 2009, the three scales were from different manufacturers, with the 10-year-old METTLER TOLEDO scale processing the largest number of trucks per day.

The State of New York requires suppliers of asphalt concrete to recertify their truck scales every 90 days during the construction season. This certification process helps ensure that scales are weighing within accuracy regulations. Every time the state inspector checked the company’s Thurman truck scale, the process involved extensive time and labor. The required adjustments to the scale would take up to two days. This major disruption resulted in poor productivity, lost revenue, and high service costs. In 2009, they decided to buy a new truck scale because it could no longer afford the downtime and service costs associated with certifying the Thurman scale. Of the three scales that had been used for years, the company was most satisfied with the METTLER TOLEDO scale . It required the least maintenance and the recertification process was extremely fast due to the consistently accurate weight readings. So the choice of supplier for the new scale was clear. “I wanted the new scale to be the best I could buy,” said the facility general manager. “There was never a doubt that we would buy a METTLER TOLEDO.”

Since installing the new METTLER TOLEDO truck scale with POWERCELL PDX load cells, the company has been amazed by the speed of the state calibration checks. “This new scale only takes about 20 minutes to certify. We really like that,” stated the plant operator. The increased productivity is providing a quick return on investment in the new scale.
